"Wise Phone"
Oil & Water Based Stains & Acrylic on Birch Plywood-12"x23"
“Wise Phone”
For starters, I got my first smart phone a little over two months ago so the words you're
reading on the phone are just as much a note to self as they are a reminder to all us bipeds
who have these amazing tools to not forget what is right in front of us and around us.
At the start of this piece, I had envisioned some sort of 'slick' perfection with regards to the
end result. In applying the first coat of stain however, I realized that much like water, a
liquid will follow the path of least resistance when it comes to utilizing it on organic porous
substrates such as wood...You can mask it tight, but you can't completely control the
results. It will bleed. This got me thinking. So much of technology is based upon perceived
perfection. Just look at your phone. The design is of perfect symmetry and geometry. I think
that sometimes technology and the way we utilize it with regards to mass communication
and the things we access or are fed via the internet, can lead to a false sense of perfection
or what perfection is...A bar to high to reach. For the record, I don't believe in perfection
except for what I see going on in the natural world when I'm out and about in it. There are
patterns and reason for everything in nature, even if what's on the surface might appear to
look chaotic and random.
Back to the piece: After realizing the stains were going to do what they wanted to an extent,
I decided to hand letter the words rather than utilize another method which would have
yielded “perfect”, crisp results. I wanted the human hand to be visible in this piece...I
wanted it to not look like a slick mass produced sign you'd see in a Verizon store or
somewhere similar advertising something. I wanted the imperfections visible, because that's
the truth with regards to humans and the world(s) we create round us...They aren’t perfect,
and that's okay.
Finally, why wood and not canvas for this piece? Other than the visual aesthetics of wood
which I love, it symbolizes a reminder to get outside in nature, silence your mouth, mind,
and phone, and absorb nature it in all its perfection.
*This style of piece is available by commission as well.

"New Release Tuesdays and Nine Ball"
Acrylic & Collage on Birch Plywood-2'x2'
One of my oldest and best friends, Robert Michael Schlenker (Mike) passed away unexpectedly on April 1, 2015. The grief I've been dealing with has been crushing at points...Art has always helped me through really bad times.
Back before digital downloads usurped record stores as the way we acquired music, Mike and I would always hit up Static Age Records(Formerly Green Eggs & Jam) on Lexington Avenue in Asheville, NC on Tuesdays, which is when new releases would come out. We'd excitedly pick a new album up and get together ASAP to listen to our new tunes. We shared an extreme passion and love for music, both listening and playing. Some of my fondest memories of us together were those listening sessions and the live shows we frequently attended.
Mike and I used to play pool all the time as well at our favorite haunt Vincent's Ear, which was also on Lexington Avenue in Asheville. I used to generally kick his butt in pool, but Mike stuck to it and eventually started kicking my butt. Pool became another passion for him and he continued improving and eventually joined a pool league, became their Captain, and lead them to the APA championships in Las Vegas.
So, this piece is dedicated to Mike and the love we shared as friends. R.I.P. Robert Michael Schlenker. (August 2, 1977-April 1, 2015)

Horse Study: More Work In Progress
Horse Study-More work in progress on Henry Miller piece. He writes about Etruscan and Ionian horses... Horse imagery is prevalent throughout the chapter, including in what I consider to be the climax of the chapter, which is the last paragraph. Again, the book is "Black Spring", and the chapter is "The Angel Is My Watermark".
Work in progress based on the chapter "The Angel Is My Watermark" from Henry Miller's book
"Black Spring".
"Black Spring" by Henry Miller is one of those books I can revisit over and over for inspiration if I'm feeling stuck with regards to creating. One chapter in particular, "The Angel Is My Watermark", is especially inspiring. Its about the author working on a painting. I'd compare the feeling I get reading it to an athlete listening to the "Rocky Theme" by Bill Conte or "Eye Of the Tiger" by Survivor in order to get themselves amped before a fight or a game. This work in progress measures approx. 22"x30" and is on canvas. I'll reveal more as this piece comes to fruition, and finally, completion.
My First Easel
I've never utilized an easel to paint. I've always painted on floors, tables, or the bed. I got my first easel yesterday. It will accommodate canvases up to 5 feet high. I am excited to try painting this way for the 1st time. Not to worry, despite having an "official" artist's easel, you will not see me donning a beret in future pictures...Unless its for a good cause or something.

"A Rebuttal and Rebuke"
(Mixed Media on Maple Plywood 11"x14")
About "A Rebuttal and Rebuke"
I wanted to write about this new piece because of what I discovered and experienced during its conception up until its completion. First, a little background.
Some of you might be familiar with Chick Tracts(The comics utilized in this piece), and some of you may not. What they are is miniature comic books that are supposed to be utilized by Christians to witness to people with the hopes of converting them to Christianity. They are published in many languages and distributed all over the world apparently. Their creator Jack chick's version of Christianity seems based on the premise that if you utilize fear, conspiracy theories, but mainly the fear of Hell and Damnation, then people will just flock to Christianity. I think his version of Christianity is the antithesis of what I perceive it to be. Let me preface this before going any further by saying I am not a Christian, a Follower Of Christ, or any other way you care to label this belief system. At the same time I have nothing against Christians or Christianity. There are always bad apples and hypocrites in any large group brought together by a shared belief system. And you Mr. Chick, are rotten, and I have a bone to pick with you to say the least.
So, why this piece of art? Well, I was raised a Christian and the church I went to as a child and teen, which labeled itself as “Non-Denominational”, always had Chick Tracts on the table where they kept the rest of their witnessing materials for distribution. So, to escape the boredom of the music and sermons which didn't feel relevant to me, I'd frequently grab a stack and read them during services not realizing the negative psychological impact they would have on me and my subconscious.
What this is all leading to is that while creating this piece I was experiencing a lot of anxiety and guilt to the point where it was effecting me physically. My stomach was in knots, I had a constant fear of impending doom, and my jaw became sore from clenching it so much. I didn't even realize I was clenching my jaw...At first, I didn't make the connection between the piece I was working on and the anxiety. I thought maybe it was worry over world events, or stresses over finances or the like. Things which most of us experience from time to time in varying degrees.
One day this past weekend I was walking with my dog in the woods like I do most days...I was relaxed and at ease as I always am while walking in the woods. Somehow it hit me and suddenly dawned upon me that the source of my anxiety was a result of the memories and experience I associated with with Chick Tracts resurfacing from deep somewhere within...My subconscious perhaps? Later that evening I discussed my discovery with my wife and told her I thought the anxiety I was experiencing would leave when the piece was finished. So, I finished the piece and although the anxiety was noticeably decreased, there were still pangs of it bubbling around my being. It was then I realized the piece would not be complete, and the anxiety rid of ,until I shared these words with you the reader.
So, with the piece itself, and these words, I have purged your twisted and sadistic ideology from my being forever Mr. Chick. You are the antithesis of what you claim to represent. Consider this “Rebuttal and Rebuke” your final walking papers. I won.
About the Piece
This work utilizes elements of appropriation and recontextualization. I cut the bottle out of a piece of 3/4” Maple Plywood and adhered and sealed individual pages of comics to it. I utilized the same/similar font used in this liquor brand's ads. I did an emulsion transfer utilizing a laser copy to transfer the text to the wood. I utilized more strips of comics along the edges of the piece. I attached the bottle to the substrate with a two part epoxy. The piece is approximately 11”x14” on 3/4” Maple Plywood.

Photo Transfers to Wood Mixed Media
This is a new technique for me I've started to explore. They are photo transfers on wood. Some will be on wood alone, and many will have other elements
mixed in with them. Its a fairly time consuming and tedious process, but I've enjoyed it.
This is a bird I took a picture of in Flagstaff, AZ. It was crazy and would dive bomb my brother and I whenever we walked out of the hotel door. I have included the original photo for reference, as well as the final manipulated one emulsified to the wood. There will be a series of this bird in different colors and patterns which I'll share as they are completed. They measure 6"x6".

"Jay Z"
(Acrylic and collage on Birch plywood. 15"x19.25")
I utilized pages of lyrics from his book "Decoded" for the background. I intentionally kept his image small to show that the poetry/lyrics, as well as his music, are of more gravity than the celebrity the media has created.
"Guardián de la Dehesa"
(Acrylic on wood-14 3/8" x 22 3/4")
"Kai-Yee Goat"
(Acrylic on salvaged wood. 15"x36")
I made this with the intent of installing it guerilla style at my friends' property. I was caught in action by their sweet dog Izzy however. BUSTED! My friends love it though, and it now lives at their house.(Click image to enlarge)

"In the Belly of Standing Indian Mountain"
(Acrylic, Laurel Branch, and Doll Head on Wood)
"Dicho -vs- The Spectrals"
(Mixed media lighted diorama in pine box)
- The materials used for this were handmade pine box, handmade collage, laurel branch painted white, toy soldiers painted pink, doll bust: hair cut off and singed then painted black and white, ready made hand toy, LED light, "cabernet" stain, and "ocean blue" stain. I did not fasten down the elements so one can create different compositions and scenarios. The collage is mounted on the rear panel. The diorama's measurements are 11 3/8" wide x 9 3/8" high x 9.5" deep.
"Color Coding Makes Sense on Milk Jug Caps"
This an assemblage of found objects which includes a piece of Laurel branch, plastic paratrooper army man, a cloth napkin, and some thread. I painted the
army man pink and everything else white. The piece was inspired by some thoughts I was having on how color is used to market
products, particularly to children with regards to gender and how so many people go along with these paradigms which are primarily
marketing schemes, for fear of shame as it relates to what is appropriately "masculine" and "feminine" if their child, or an adult
for that matter, is seen wearing the 'wrong' color.
Currently, the paradigm seems to be "Boys are blue and girls are pink.". The funny thing is that not too long ago the opposite was true. The color pink was associated with the color red which symbolized fiery passion, aggressiveness, assertiveness...'manliness', and so many boys were dressed in pink. The color blue was associated with reserved calm and submissiveness...'femininity'. The point here being, always question dominant paradigms.

CareNet Thrift Store Sign
CareNet provides food, utilities, and other types of assistance to people in need. They are a local non-profit. They have a thrift store
to help with funding. A volunteer at the thrift store asked if I'd be willing to make them a sign to go on Main St. on an alleyway directing
people their way. This is what I came up with and donated. Lowes donated the wood for use in this, so, a big thank you goes to them.
Measures approximately 12"X15" and is two sided. I made patterns for the text and hand to keep both sides consistent, but then did
everything else free handed. Pyrography & Stain on Birch wood.

This piece was inspired by the documentary "Blackfish".
The word libertas is a Latin word and means "freedom".

I personally wish after seeing the film that Orcas, male and female,
not be held in captivity and used for our entertainment. If you

Keyholes...
I found four old keyholes that used to be on doors a long time ago who knows where. I've been utilizing them on new pieces which are below. Some things I've been thinking about while making these pieces: Time(the relativity and perception of). Forbidden knowledge: Is it really "forbidden"? If so, why? The process of creation and where its coming from within me. The juxtaposition of industrialized society and nature. What's the point of Cities? Do they hold any real value in the grand scheme of things? Phase Space and other quantum mechanics/physics theories...Do patterns in nature reveal these spaces? Is there in fact chaos? Is that even possible? What do I truly value and need? What do you truly value and need? Why does it seem I'm only capable of great poems and other written forms when in longing, or when I feel something is missing or lost? Am I just becoming hardened and complacent in certain areas of life? Is this a necessary survival mechanism I've created unconsciously? It seems like everything Is. Everything just Is...What's that voice that speaks to me while on my daily walks with my dog in the woods? Is that voice something I created? Do I spend too much time alone? I wake up every day and know I have to create. That much is certain. I really can't spell it all out for you. I don't want to. Why would I? You see what you see in it. You create your own narratives and meanings. That's your part. I do this because I have to. Why do you do what you do? What do you see through the keyhole? Anyways, just a little look into what goes through my head sometimes. I'm in love with life.

"Al aka Alien"
This is the last piece for now in my series touching on pop culture.
You can view the other two right below this one.
"Alien" is a character in the Harmony Korine film "Spring Breakers",
played brilliantly by James Franco. His "Look at my shit!" speech
will surely be remembered and recited for a long time to come.
Harmony Korine is a writer and director who got his start by writing the
movie "Kids" directed by Larry Clark. Korine then went on to make an
all time favorite film of mine, "Gummo".
Korine's projects tend to strike a nerve viscerally. And, like all great art,
will hit you on a level you can't quite define right away, but are left to ruminate
on. (click on image to enlarge)

New Painting & Memories Revived
My wife and I are owned by a Boxer named "Julie". This piece is a tribute to Boxers. My Great Grandmother Nanny Neat, who was a feisty, grammar correcting, crazy driving, "proper" British lady, bred and raised Boxers when I was a kid. When Nanny passed away I remember getting a boxer trophy from her house from one of the dog shows she participated in. The trophy eventually was misplaced and I had all but forgotten about Boxers and Nanny until Julie came in the picture about four years ago. Not only has she brought unmeasurable love, sweetness, clowning, and joy to our lives, she enabled me to reconnect with memories of my Great Grandmother and her house/Kennel on Fruitville Rd. On the back of the painting you see to your left is a quote from the AKC's Boxer Breed Standard of 1938 which reads:
"The character of the Boxer is of the greatest importance and demands the most solicitous attention. He is renowned from olden times for his great love and faithfulness to his master and household...".
With all this being said, I love all dogs whether purebred or mixed. I believe we have an important responsibility as humans to care as best we can for these companions of ours while we are blessed to have them in our lives. That goes for any animal domesticated, or wild! Please remember to spay or neuter your cat and/or dog.

These two pieces are intentionally distressed to give an aged look, or, the look of a decrepit city wall that has been plastered with flyers and/or graffiti over the years.
These "wall" pieces (more of which you can find on this site), came about as a result of a dream I had where I was looking at a wall somewhere in an Indian city. I remember being intrigued by the build up of layers that occurred over many years and could discern tiny fragments of the city's history within the layers. It reminded me that sometimes the versions of history we get are much like the wall I was viewing. Someone once said, to roughly paraphrase, 'History is written by the winners.'. The funny thing is, no one can agree on the quote's source. Some say Napoleon, some Churchill, and still others, William F. Buckley Jr.. Think on that if you will. |

"Ron Rash Resuscitates the Carolina Parakeet"
Ron Rash is a novelist, poet, and short story writer from Western North Carolina. I love his work and would recommend any of his books to anyone.
I got to meet Mr. Rash at my local library when he was doing a reading and signing of his most recent novel, "The Cove". I was impressed by his down to earth manner and his sincerity. The Carolina Parakeet is a now extinct bird that resided at one time in the mountains I live in. Mr. Rash's writing first made me aware of this beautiful, now extinct bird which possessed fascinating social habits. (Click Image To Enlarge) |
"Wilde Wall"
This is the third piece in the Oscar Wilde Series(Click to enlarge)
-Start Of The Oscar Wilde Series-
I have decided to create a series of pieces which will center around the image
of Oscar Wilde. I have recently been reading his works for the first time and have found great inspiration as a result. He had many great insights into art, the human condition, as well as being in possession of a great acerbic wit. I would have liked to have known him. These first two pieces were completed over one weekend. I am working on the third in the series, which should combine paint, stencil, and collage. It will be on luan wood. Look for it soon. You can keep scrolling down on this page to see what I've been making lately, as well as going to the "Gallery" page on this site. Thanks for stopping By.-Justin |
-SUP-
Well, this project is finally completed. This is a stand up paddle board, which
was constructed by my Father Harold Moe of Green Leaf Canoe Company. He then handed it off to me to design and apply graphics, as well as paint and finish it, including applying the traction pad. Materials Used In Construction: Luan wood, Cedar, Pine,Glue, Epoxy, and Fiberglass. Materials Used In Finishing: Handmade Stencil, Black Enamel Paint, Cool Grey Exterior Paint, Deft Polyurethane with UV Protectant, Spar Varnish For Paddle and Fins, and Traction Pad From Punt Surf Of San Francisco, CA. Many many thanks to my father Harold Moe for being a brilliant wood worker and watercraft builder, and for giving me the opportunity to collaborate with him.
